The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen area and operates its own application system. Holding a valid Schengen visa does not give you the right to enter the UK; you need to make a separate application.
Which category do you apply under?
Short visits are generally assessed under the Standard Visitor category. Tourist visits, business meetings, family and friend visits, and short-term study and course attendance fall within this category.
How does the process work?
- Determining the application category. The right category is chosen according to the purpose of your trip.
- Online application. The application form is completed online and the fee is paid.
- Appointment and biometrics. Fingerprints and a photo are taken at the visa application centre.
- Submitting documents. Supporting documents are submitted with the application.
- Assessment and result. Your application is assessed by the relevant authority.

Main differences from Schengen
- No insurance requirement. While travel health insurance is an application requirement for Schengen, there is no such requirement for UK applications. It is still recommended for your trip.
- A different logic for length of stay. The Schengen 90-days-in-180 rule does not apply to the UK; a visitor visa usually allows stays of up to 6 months.
- The application starts entirely online. The form and payment come first, biometrics later.
Headings that stand out in your file
In UK applications, a clear purpose for the visit, showing that you can finance the trip and documents demonstrating your ties to Türkiye matter. Your employment or student status, your financial activity and, if any, invitation documents are at the centre of the file.
A common mistake
The most common problem is a mismatch between the information declared in the online form and the documents submitted. Having your documents ready while filling in the form greatly reduces this risk.
